Antwerp's 2km local dinner aims to break Belgium's record for longest table
Antwerp's Borgerhout district will host a dinner event on 31 March that aims to break the record for the longest table in Belgium while celebrating cultural diversity through food and conversation. The event falls amid Ramadan and Easter.
After an event with a 1km table last year, this month a 2km table will be set up along Turnhoutsebaan at the end of March, hosting a meal for members of people in the neighbourhood. District Borgerhout, SAAMO Antwerp, FMV, trade association Boho2140, De Reuzen vzw and Pak ze aan will use the event to promote dialogue, connection, support for local entrepreneurs and sustainability awareness to residents.
“FMV, with the other partners, wants to demonstrate that the cultural and religious diversity that Borgerhout has to offer can actually be uniting. And food is the ideal instrument,” says Latifa El Morabit, general coordinator of the #2kmsamenaantafel event. The dinner, which takes place during Ramadan, will host 6,000 to 8,000 people and will begin at sunset (20.14) to accommodate those who are fasting.
Mayor Miriam El Orsi of Flemish green party Groen is confident the event will break previous records. “If we succeed in our aim, we will immediately form the longest table in Belgium," she said. "Borgerhout residents are therefore cordially invited to share a meal and write history together."
Attendees can bring their own food or buy a meal from one of the participating merchants. “We are going for a zero waste event by only using reusable materials," says El Orsi. "This is not easy in terms of organisation, but it is necessary. We are also asking people to prevent food waste. So providing an excess of food is really not necessary."
