Again record number of serious pneumococcal infections in Belgium last year

In 2025, as in 2024, a record number of “invasive pneumococcal infections” was recorded in Belgium. This was announced by the National Reference Centre of the Sciensano health institute. Invasive pneumococcal infections are serious infections such as meningitis or sepsis.
In 2025, the National Reference Centre reported 2,479 confirmed cases of invasive pneumococcal infections, a record number for the second year in a row. This represents a 17 per cent increase compared to 2024, when 2,120 cases – already the highest number in ten years – were recorded. The increase is particularly pronounced among adults. The sharpest rise is seen in those aged 85 and over (+36 per cent).
The increase in meningitis cases is even more pronounced (+34 per cent), mainly among adults. In addition, at least 145 deaths were reported in 2025.
Most invasive pneumococcal infections can be prevented by vaccination. The Superior Health Council therefore recommends vaccination for at-risk groups and further strengthened its advice at the end of last year. The vaccines are free for children under the age of 2, provided they are administered by the government organisation Kind en Gezin or the CLB (Centre for Student Guidance).
