418,000 passengers sign up for Train+ pass in first month

A total of 418,000 people have subscribed to the Train+ discount programme in its first month, rail operator SNCB/NMBS reports.
SNCB redesigned its fare structure last month. Among the changes are the scrapping of 10-ride tickets and the introduction of Train+, a subscription paid monthly or annually that offers discounts at weekends and during off-peak hours. Fares are calculated based on distance.
The company hopes to reach 1 million subscribers. Of the 418,000 who have signed up, half have paid for one year at a discounted introductory rate.
Train+ costs 6 euros a month or 48 euros a year, with a 50 per cent reduction until 4 January. With the pass, passengers get a 40 per cent discount for off-peak travel during the week. On weekends and public holidays, there is a 40 per cent extra discount in addition to the standard 30 per cent weekend discount.
Okra, an association representing senior citizens, says the system has made longer journeys more expensive for over-65s and have called for a simplified scheme that would provide free train travel for seniors.
“We fear this will cause the elderly to revert more to the car as a means of transport, instead of opting for the much more sustainable public transport,” they said when the new fare structure was announced.
