2025 was another record year for speed pedelecs in Belgium

In 2025, a record number of speed pedelecs were registered in Belgium, announced mobility federation Traxio on Friday. This electric bicycle, which offers pedalling assistance up to 45 km/h, is particularly popular in Flanders. This morning, the major bicycle fair Velofollies started in Kortrijk, West Flanders province.

“2025 was a record year for second-hand speed pedelecs and the third-best year ever for new speed pedelecs,” stated Filip Rylant, spokesperson for the mobility federation Traxio. “Cumulatively, this makes 2025 the best year ever for these bikes in Belgium.” A total of 14,058 new and 9,623 second-hand speed pedelecs were registered in the country last year.

The province of East Flanders in particular is responsible for the positive figures. There, the market has grown by no less than 34.6 per cent. In almost all other provinces, the number of registrations has fallen compared to 2024.

Speed pedelecs remain mainly a Flemish phenomenon. No less than 97.5 per cent of all high-speed e-bikes are registered in Flanders.

Leasing is becoming increasingly popular. No less than two-thirds of all registered speed pedelecs were purchased by companies. At the same time, the number of private individuals opting for such a bike has fallen sharply again.

Once the leasing period for the speed pedelecs has ended, these bicycles also end up on the second-hand market. According to Traxio, customers are showing increasingly more interest in this. “Second-hand speed pedelecs account for 40.6 per cent of the total number of registrations,” explained Rylant. This market has grown by a quarter in one year.

On Friday morning, the large bicycle fair Velofollies opened at Kortrijk Xpo, where more than 300 exhibitors representing over 600 brands are present at the 18th edition. The range varies from e-bikes and urban bikes to mountain bikes and racing bikes, and is aimed at both recreational and sporting cyclists. The fair runs until Sunday 18 January.
