1,248 fines issued for smoking on railway platforms in first half of 2025

From January to June 2025, 1,248 fines were issued to people caught smoking on or near railway platforms in Belgium. The figures were released by Federal Mobility minister Jean-Luc Crucke and reported by Sudinfo on Friday.

So far, an average of 208 fines per month were issued in the first half of this year. That is lower than the years before: in 2023, 2,747 fines were issued, an average of 228 per month. In 2024, the monthly average rose to 269, for a total of 3,238 infractions.

Smoking and vaping on railway platforms in Belgium has been banned since 1 January 2023. The fine amounts to 50 euros.

Recently, the government also decided to ban smoking and vaping on and near terraces. That ban will go into effect on 1 January 2027.
