Zelensky and De Croo discuss military aid and bilateral security agreement in Brussels
Prime minister Alexander De Croo will meet Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday to discuss Belgium's military support of Ukraine and sign a bilateral security agreement, he announced on Monday during a broadcast on Play4.
Zelensky arrived in Belgium on Monday evening from Spain. Earlier this month, he had to cancel his planned visit to Spain because of the new Russian offensive in northern Ukraine, which also affected his then-unannounced visit to Belgium.
"Loosely translated: what security guarantees does our country give to Ukraine? The delivery of our F-16s is, of course, very important there," De Croo said. Belgium intends to deliver a total of 45 F-16s.
De Croo and Defence minister Ludivine Dedonder will also host Zelensky at the military airport of Melsbroek on Tuesday. There, they will meet the F-16 pilots, instructors and technicians and Zelensky will receive "a briefing on the operation and maintenance of our F-16 by our military personnel", the prime minister's office said.
The cabinet confirmed that De Croo and Zelensky will hold a press briefing in Brussels at 10.30. At 11.30, King Philippe will receive Zelensky at the royal palace.
