World's largest mobile solar panel installation keeps Boomtown humming
The Boomtown festival began on Friday with the world's largest mobile solar panel installation. It will power the seven-day musical discovery event that runs as part of the Gentse Feesten.
For the second year, Boomtown is working with energy platform Bolt to power the festival with green energy. This year, the Solar Container, the world's largest mobile solar panel installation, will provide the necessary energy.
With a surface area of 170m2 of solar panels, the installation can generate approximately 150 to 200 kWh of electricity per day, which can also be stored in the integrated 55 kWh battery.
Sustainable festival
"Boomtown has been committed to making the festival more sustainable for years. The use and experimentation with Bolt's mobile solar panel installation is part of this effort," says Eric Smout of music club Democrazy, the organisation behind Boomtown.
"With the world's largest mobile solar panel installation, Bolt is helping to make the greenest Gentse Feesten a reality," says Energy minister Tinne Van der Straeten of Groen.
"Renewable energy sources will keep the music playing and the drinks chilled"
"Not diesel generators but local and renewable energy sources will keep the music playing and the drinks chilled. The city of Ghent and the organisers on the various squares will demonstrate with numerous initiatives that partying and sustainability go hand in hand."
The Solar Container will supply several events with locally generated electricity this summer. Boomtown will be the first festival to use the container, followed by Sfinks Mixed and smaller events in Belgium.
