World Speed Skating Championships: Bart Swings Mass Start World Champion

Bart Swings became World Champion in the mass start on Saturday in Heerenveen, the Netherlands.

The 32-year-old from Leuven, the Olympic champion in this speciality, dominated the race with authority over the 15 other skaters. At the end of the 16 laps of the Thialf track, Bart Swings was ahead of Dutchman Bart Hoolwerf and Italian Andrea Giovannini.

This is the third medal at the World Championships in Distance for Bart Swings, who won bronze in the 1,500m on Thursday and bronze in the mass start in Heerenveen in 2021.

Mathias Vosté finished 8th in the 1,000m in 1:08.75, ahead of American Jordan Stolz in 1:07.11. Dutchman Thomas Krol (1:07.78) in 2nd and Briton Cornelius Kersten (1:08.02) in 3rd completed the podium.

Stolz has already won the 500m and is the favourite to win the 1,500m on Sunday.
