World Cup Mind Sports for students starts in Antwerp today

On Monday, the World University Championship Mind Sports 2022 started on the campus of the University of Antwerp. The students - whose academic year only starts in two weeks - compete in two different competitions: bridge and chess.

"For the bridge competition, we welcome 88 athletes from eleven different countries," says Nils Van de Velden of the university sports department. "In chess, 71 students from fifteen countries will cross swords. Among others, there will be minders from Taipei, Thailand, Uganda and Mongolia."

It is the first time WUC Mind Sports takes place in a physical location since the COVID-19 pandemic. The edition in 2020 was originally planned to take place in Poland, but was ultimately held online due to travel and health restrictions. Both competitions will take place in the sixteenth-century Hof van Liere of the University of Antwerp.
