White jersey wearer Cian Uijtdebroeks abandons Giro d'Italia due to illness
Cian Uijtdebroeks will not start the 11th stage of the Giro d'Italia on Wednesday. The Belgian rider, fifth in the general classification and holder of the white jersey, is ill, his team Visma - Lease a Bike confirmed on X.
The Giro d'Italia was the second Grand Tour for 21-year-old Uijtdebroeks. He made his debut at the end of last season with an eighth place finish in the Vuelta d'España.
In the general classification, Uijtdebroeks was fifth, 4'15" behind pink jersey holder Tadej Pogacar. The Belgian complained of slight respiratory problems after Tuesday's third mountain stage.
"Everyone in the peloton is a bit sick"
"Hopefully I can recover from that in the next few days," said Uijtdebroeks on Tuesday. "Everyone in the peloton is a bit sick. We definitely need to make sure it doesn't get any worse. If this is my bad day, I'll be happy".
Getting sick during the Giro d'Italia seems to be a common theme for Belgian riders. Only last year, Remco Evenepoel was forced to abandon the race and his hopes of winning the pink jersey due to a Covid-19 infection.
