Designer Walter Van Beirendonck has created 500 unique sweaters in a collaboration with fashion chain JBC using leftover materials.
The Future Friendly range was launched on Thursday at JBC in Antwerp’s Meir and will be available online from Friday while stocks last. Working with leftover materials means that no new fabrics are manufactured, and all the pieces are produced in Belgium.
“I wanted to create a collector’s item that radiates hope,” says Van Beirendonck. “The central image of a rising sun symbolises a new beginning and a future full of possibilities.”

Because the jumpers are made from leftover yarn, the shade of each colour may vary. When a yarn runs out, it is replaced by a new shade within the same colour palette. The collection is unisex and available in sizes 6–12 years and XS–XL.
Van Beirendonck was one of the group of designers known as the Antwerp Six, who burst onto the scene at London Fashion Week in 1986 after graduating from Antwerp’s renowned Royal Academy. The other members were Ann Demeulemeester, Dries Van Noten, Marina Yee, Dirk Van Saene and Dirk Bikkembergs.
JBC, based in Limburg, has around 150 stores across Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany.
