Walloon exports reached a record high in 2021

Walloon exports reached a record high in 2021, just like Flemish exports,. Wallonia exported more than 50 billion euros for the first time, according to figures from Walloon Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade Willy Borsus and the Walloon export agency Awex. The most important export product is pharmaceuticals, it accounted for 18 billion euros in 2021, or one-third of the total export value.
After a drop of more than 5 percent in the corona-signed year 2020, an increase in exports of 13.5 percent followed in 2021. That was the strongest increase since 2020. Walloon exports thus amounted to 53.4 billion euros.
The record is due to exports within the European Union. These increased by 21%. Exports outside the EU, on the other hand, decreased by 1.7 percent. Amongst others, exports to the United Kingdom were hit hard (-30 percent).
Wallonia's main trade partners are France (21.7% of total exports), Germany (15.5%) and the United States (12.6%).
The year 2021 was also a record year for Flemish exports, as the Flemish export agency FIT previously announced. Goods worth 380.5 billion euros were exported, over a quarter more than in 2020 and 16% more than in the previous record year, 2018.
