Business leader criticises political stalemate as 'culpable neglect'

The chair of the Flemish employers' association has criticised the ongoing stalemate in forming a federal government as "culpable neglect" and called for stronger leadership. During Voka's new year reception in Brussels, Rudy Provoost said party leaders must set aside narrow political agendas and unrealistic election pledges and take responsibility.
"Effective political impact lies not in winning votes but in implementing policy," Provoost said. "Real leadership unites rather than divides. Party-political hobby horses and unaffordable election promises must give way to a shared vision and sustainable cooperation. Respect for the democratic mandate of the voter is a moral duty; the current impasse is culpable neglect."
The situation is dire for large industrial firms and the SMEs reliant on them, Provoost cautioned in his address.
"The malaise is deep and widespread, fuelled by declining demand, exorbitant regulatory pressure, excessive charges and an increasing wage and energy cost handicap compared to our neighbouring countries," he said. "This undermines not only our competitiveness but also the profitability of our companies."
"Real leadership unites rather than divides"
He said there was an urgent need for "resolute political leadership" as Belgium remains without a new federal government seven months after the elections. Negotiations between N-VA, Vooruit, CD&V, MR and Les Engagés are ongoing.
Voka managing director Hans Maertens echoed these sentiments, quoting Flemish singer Pommelien Thijs: "It's make or break, now or never. We've already wasted so much time."
Among the audience was outgoing Finance minister Vincent Van Peteghem of CD&V, one of the negotiators.
Immediate action and long-term changes
Voka called for the swift formation of a government committed to targeted savings and structural reforms, not higher taxes on entrepreneurship or wealth. Provoost highlighted the need for labour market and tax reforms: "Making work more rewarding, entrepreneurship more attractive and investing more interesting go hand in hand."
The new Flemish government was also referred to. Provoost said 2025 must be "the year of truth", when the coalition agreement translates into tangible action. Voka expects progress in areas like the economy, industry, work, education, mobility, climate and energy.
"Entrepreneurship despite politics wastes energy and resources"
"Half-measures are not an option," he said. "We expect federal and Flemish politicians to emerge as game-makers, not spoilsports. Entrepreneurship despite politics wastes energy and resources. Better entrepreneurship through good policy ensures productivity and competitiveness."
Voka represents around 18,000 companies. The new year reception, traditionally a high-profile event, brought together hundreds of entrepreneurs, politicians and civil society organisations at Bozar arts centre.
