Vlaams Belang invites Jordan Bardella to the Flemish Parliament

Jordan Bardella, leader of France’s far-right party Rassemblement National, is due to visit the Flemish Parliament on 11 June. He is doing so at the invitation of Vlaams Belang, as the far-right Flemish party has announced via the website bardellavient.be.
With a year to go until the French presidential elections, Vlaams Belang is thus bringing the leader of the far-right Rassemblement National to Flanders, specifically to the Flemish Parliament. The aim is for Bardella to speak, among other things, “about his vision for the future of Europe and free nations”.
According to the invitation, the evening will be introduced by Brussels MP Bob De Brabandere, and party leader Tom Van Grieken will close the event with a speech.
This is not the first time that Vlaams Belang has brought a like-minded leading French top politician to Flanders. In 2015, the party invited Marine Le Pen, former leader of the Front National (the predecessor of the Rassemblement National), to a colloquium in the Flemish Parliament. That visit was not without controversy at the time and was accompanied by a demonstration.
According to Flemish Parliament speaker Freya Van den Bossche, this is a Vlaams Belang parliamentary group event. “The General Secretariat assesses the application against the regulations. If the application meets the conditions of the regulations, the General Secretariat authorises the event. As this is a parliamentary group event that met those conditions, the General Secretariat has authorised it,” said Van den Bossche.
