US to impose 10 per cent import duty on countries sending troops to Greenland

US president Donald Trump will introduce a 10 per cent import duty on 1 February for European countries that have sent troops to Greenland. He announced the move on Truth Social.
The duties will remain in force until “a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland”. The levy will be increased to 25 per cent on 1 June. Belgium, which is sending one officer, is not targeted.
Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland have all sent troops to Greenland. Trump accuses them of playing “a very dangerous game” by sending troops to Greenland “for purposes unknown” and says he is taking the measure “so that this potentially perilous situation end quickly, and without question”.
Trump insists the US needs Greenland for security reasons. He says the US has been trying to acquire the territory for more than 150 years but Denmark has always refused. He has indicated that he is open to negotiations with Denmark and the other countries affected.
Thousands of people joined protests in Greenland and Denmark on Saturday against the US plans.
