Up to 441 jobs at risk at Nike logistics centre in Belgium

Up to 441 jobs could be cut at the European distribution centre of Nike in Laakdal, Belgium, the company announced on Tuesday.
The possible job losses were presented during a special works council meeting, according to Marieke Van Gils from the socialist trade union BBTK.
Around 330 of the threatened jobs are in weekend shifts at Nike’s European Logistics Campus, which handles online orders. The company says the move is linked to falling sales volumes. Online sales rose sharply during the COVID-19 pandemic but have dropped significantly since then. Nike now wants to focus more on sales through physical shops.
More than 1,000 employees currently work in the weekend teams, although the exact number is unclear. Last June, Nike had already reduced the number of weekend workers by 155. At that time, affected staff were offered weekday roles or a social plan.
In addition to the weekend cuts, another 81 jobs in the logistics team could also disappear as the company aims to simplify and improve efficiency in its operations.
A further meeting between management and unions is scheduled for next Thursday. Trade unions say staff will be fully informed in meetings later this week and do not rule out protests.
About 5,000 people work at the Nike site in Laakdal. Six months ago, the company also announced plans to cut around 80 jobs in its technology department.
