Unknown Ensor painting surfaces after 80 years
An unknown painting by James Ensor has surfaced after 80 years. The still life of pink and white flowers in a vase will be auctioned at the end of June.
The Brussels auction house Arenberg Auctions said the work would start at 10,000 euros. The existence of the oil painting was only known from Ensor's sketchbook, and it has been in the possession of a private collector all this time.
Thanks to an additional inscription in the book, the painting can be dated to around 18 April 1940, when Ensor was 80 years old. In addition to the unknown still life, 10 etchings by Ensor will be sold at Arenberg Auctions between 27 and 29 July.
Ensor (1860-1949) was a Belgian painter who lived in Ostend for most of his life. A major influence on expressionism and surrealism, he was known for his playful yet haunting mask paintings and still lifes.
As 2024 marks the 75th anniversary of Ensor's death, Belgium is paying tribute to the painter with numerous exhibitions this year.
