United States announces $300 million aid package for Ukraine

The White House has announced a new 300 million dollar aid package for Ukraine. This is much less than the 60 billion dollars US president Joe Biden promised to his Ukrainian counterpart.

Jake Sullivan, an adviser to Biden, stresses that the package "addresses some of Ukraine's urgent needs" but is not a substitute for new funding from the US Congress.

It includes anti-aircraft missiles, ammunition and artillery shells, according to a senior US official who spoke on condition of anonymity. "This is relatively modest aid, designed to provide Ukraine with the minimum it needs for a short period of time," he adds.

Meanwhile, supporters of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in Congress are blocking the more ambitious 60 billion dollar aid package.
