Unique AI tool of Ghent University speeds up searches in Flemish Sign Language Dictionary

From now on, all people need to do is film a sign with their smartphone, tablet or laptop to immediately look up its meaning in the online Flemish Sign Language Dictionary. The Flemish Sign Language Centre (VGTC) and Ghent University (IDLab - imec) are integrating a new AI search function that automatically recognises every sign, even when new signs are added to the dictionary at a later date. This is a world first.
The Flemish Sign Language Dictionary contains over 11,000 signs and is one of the largest sign language dictionaries in the world. Until now, users could only search using a Dutch keyword or the characteristics of a sign. The new function reverses that process: artificial intelligence (AI) analyses the sign shown and displays the most resembling results with their meanings. This makes the dictionary more accessible to anyone learning Flemish Sign Language (VGT), both deaf and hearing people.
"This project shows how AI can help break down communication barriers"
According to the developers, this technology could be an important step towards greater inclusion. “This project shows how AI can help break down communication barriers and thus contribute to a more inclusive society in which everyone, regardless of hearing status, can participate fully,” stated Joni Dambre of Ghent University (UGent).
The project was realised within the “amai!” programme, which promotes innovative AI solutions with the support of the Flemish government. The VGTC coordinated the process, and UGent developed the AI model that is now built into the dictionary as a permanent search function. The new function is available via the dictionary vlaamsegebarentaal.be under “Zoek op gebaar” - “Search by sign”.
