Union pull off surprise win at Galatasaray with 'exceptional' performance

Union Saint-Gilloise pulled off a surprise Champions league victory on Tuesday, beating Galatasaray 1-0 in Istanbul and ending the Turkish side’s 34-match unbeaten home run. The result keeps the Belgian champions firmly in the race for a top-24 spot.
“I’m incredibly proud of the boys,” Union manager David Hubert said after the match. “They were unbeaten at home for 34 matches and had nine points out of 12 in the Champions League. For Union to do this is an exceptional achievement.”
Union kept their composure in the face of the sport's loudest fan base. Galatasaray fans broke the decibel record during a match in 2013, reaching 131.76 decibels, placing them in the Guinness World Records book for the loudest crowd roar at a sports stadium at the time.

“The challenge was to get them as quiet as possible,” Hubert. “We didn’t succeed because they kept blowing their whistles until the last minute, but that only served as an extra incentive. We showed courage today and seized our moments. We also kept a clean sheet, which we hadn’t managed in the Champions League before. That’s very good.”
With six points from 15, Union remain in the race for a top-24 finish, with home matches against Marseille and Atalanta and a trip to Bayern Munich still to come. However, Hubert prefers not to look too far ahead. “Let’s just enjoy this for now. It’s exceptional. But this should give us even more fuel to believe in it even more.”
