Union beat Antwerp in final to claim first Belgian Cup in 110 years
Union Saint-Gilloise have won the Belgian Cup for the first time since 1914, beating holders Royal Antwerp 1-0 in Thursday’s final in Brussels.
Koki Machida’s goal on the stroke of half-time was enough to secure victory. This is the first trophy for Union since 1935, when the club won their 11th and last league title. They previously won the Cup in 1913 and 1914.
"A lot of hard work has been put in over the years," Union captain Anthony Moris told RTL. "We have some great players who have come through the club and they should also be proud because it's thanks to them that we can play this kind of match. We can be proud of leaving our mark on Union's history."
While defeat means reigning league champions Antwerp finish the season empty-handed, Union have a league and cup double in their sights with three matches of the season remaining.
