Ukrainians can take higher education entrance exams in Brussels

Flemish minister of Education Ben Weyts will give Ukrainian refugees the opportunity this summer to take entrance exams in Brussels which give them access to higher education in Ukraine. This way, young people do not lose their chance to follow a bachelor or master programme. With these entrance exams, the N-VA (Flemish nationalist party) minister wants to respond to a call from the Ukrainian government. Flanders will provide a location and all necessary materials, wile the Ukrainians themselves will take care of supervision during the entrance exams.

In Ukraine - as in many other countries - students are only admitted to a bachelor's or master's programme if they have passed an entrance exam. Before the Russian invasion, these written entrance exams were organised in the months of May and June in different examination locations throughout the country.

However, due to the war in the country, the entrance examinations cannot be organised in their normal form now. Moreover, many young people who would like to transfer to higher education next year are currently abroad, for example because they fled with their parents.

"The Ukrainians are doing everything they can to offer as much continuity as possible to young people, even in these terrible circumstances. Flanders is happy to help with that."

Flemish minister of Education Ben Weyts is now giving Ukrainian refugees in Flanders the opportunity to take their entrance exams for higher education in Brussels this summer. In doing so, Weyts is responding to a request from the Ukrainian minister of Education Serhiy Shkarlet. Countries such as the Netherlands, France and Germany are also responding to this request.

During the summer months Ukrainian youngsters living in Flanders will be able to take their entrance exam in the Conscience building in Sint-Joost-Ten-Node. The Flemish government will provide the location, computer equipment and IT experts to solve any defects quickly. The Ukrainian Ministry of Education provides exam supervisors, who will monitor each session. The entrance exam for the bachelor's programmes will focus on knowledge of the Ukrainian language, mathematics and the history of Ukraine. The entrance exam for the master's programmes will assess more advanced knowledge.

"The Ukrainians are doing everything they can to offer as much continuity as possible to young people, even in these terrible circumstances", says Weyts. "Flanders is happy to help with that. This entrance exam means hope for a better future for many young people."
