Euro 2025: Red Flames lose to Spain as hopes rest on Italy vs Portugal outcome

The presence of King Philippe in the stands could not help Belgium turn the tide in their second group-stage match at the Women’s Euros in Switzerland on Monday. The Red Flames lost 6–2 to reigning world champions Spain.

Head coach Elisabet Gunnarsdottir selected the same starting line-up as for Thursday's opening match against Italy, which ended in a 1–0 defeat.

This loss leaves Belgium’s hopes of progressing hanging by a thread. Their fate now depends on the result of Monday night’s later fixture between Italy and Portugal, which kicks off at 21.00.

If Italy secure at least a draw, Belgium will be eliminated from the tournament, rendering their final group match on Friday in Sion irrelevant. Only the top two teams from each group advance to the quarter-finals.
