There will be no tram or pre-metro service between Brussels Midi and Porte de Hal for a year from Monday. Major works being carried out beneath Place Bara will affect the network in the south of the city for 12 months, with changes to lines 4, 10, 51 and 81.

Transport operator STIB/MIVB says the work is essential. The infrastructure, which is around 40 years old, is suffering from water ingress in the concrete and corrosion to the steel structures.

“Without major repairs, there is a risk of collapse onto the tracks below,” the company says. “It is essential to take action before the structure deteriorates further.”

Metro lines 2 and 6 will operate as normal between Porte de Hal and Gare du Midi during the works. Pre-metro line 4 will be split into two sections: between Gare du Nord and Wiels in the north, and between Porte de Hal and Stalle in the south. Line 10 will run only between Hôpital Militaire and Midi.

Tram 51 will terminate at Lemonnier, while tram 81 will be replaced by a bus between Marius Renard and Midi. Bus 96 will operate between Midi and Trinité, replacing part of tramline 81. Bus 50 will have an increased service and will be extended to Gare Centrale. Bus 37 will be extended from Albert to Midi.

The company “is doing everything possible to inform passengers about the changes through signage, leaflets, targeted newsletters, etc”, it says. “During the first few days, more than a hundred additional staff members will be deployed to assist passengers on the ground.”
