Train platforms to become smoke free in 2023

From 2023, smoking will no longer be allowed on train platforms of the NMBS/SNCB. This was approved by the Belgian parliamentary Mobility Committee on Wednesday. Smoking has been prohibited on trains since 2004, but is still allowed on uncovered or semi-covered platforms.
The measure would not take effect until early 2023. That should give SNCB time to inform passengers of the reasons and benefits of this measure in terms of public health and protecting the environment. The text was created in cooperation with Belgian cancer charities Kom Op Tegen Kanker and Stichting Tegen Kanker.
Mobility Minister Georges Gilkinet reacted with satisfaction to the approval of the proposal of his Green colleagues. "Stations must be clean and pleasant. By making the platforms of stations smoke-free from 2023 onwards, the same rules will apply here as in other public spaces. This change in the law is therefore good news for the comfort and health of travellers, who have been asking for this for some time."
The SNCB supports the decision to make platforms smoke-free. It will not only benefit the cleanliness of the stations and the comfort of travellers, but will also make the situation clearer, according to the railway company.
