Traffic congestion in Flanders broke records in 2025

Several traffic jam records were broken on Flemish roads last year, according to figures published on Tuesday by the Flemish Traffic Centre. Flemish drivers have never spent so much time stuck in traffic, and monthly records were set in January, February, June and August.
The total time spent in traffic jams reached a new high in 2025. All vehicles combined lost an average of almost 105,000 hours a day in congestion, the first time the 100,000-hour threshold has been exceeded. In 2024, the figure stood at 98,419 hours. When only working days are taken into account, the figures are even higher.
Last year also saw the worst June ever in terms of road congestion, with an average of 167km of traffic jams and around 21 accidents a day. According to Bruyninckx, hot weather contributed to those figures. January, February and August also set new records for traffic congestion last year.
64,000,000km
In 2025, vehicles collectively covered 64,319,452km in Flanders. That number continues to rise steadily, although traffic volumes remained below pre-pandemic levels. The heaviest morning rush hour last year occurred on 11 February, with more than 330km of congestion. The worst evening rush hour followed on 30 April, on the eve of a sunny long weekend, when traffic jams totalled 230km.
Despite the record-breaking figures, 2025 is not the worst year on record for congestion in Flanders. With an average of 159km of traffic jams, 2024 retains that distinction. The worst day on record also occurred that year: on a working day in November 2024, traffic jams averaged 206km.
