Tour de France: Wout Van Aert and Jonas Vingegaard fit enough to take part
Team Visma-Lease a Bike has announced its selection for the upcoming Tour de France, with both two-time Tour winner Jonas Vingegaard and Wout van Aert ready to race. The star riders have recovered from serious crashes this spring.
Vingegaard won the last two editions of the Tour de France. However, he crashed out of the Tour of the Basque Country in April, breaking his collarbone, several ribs and suffering a bruised lung. The Dane has spent the last two months recovering from his injuries, which were so serious that it was unclear if he would be able to race at all this season.
Van Aert, meanwhile, crashed in Dwars door Vlaanderen at the end of March, breaking his collarbone, breastbone and several ribs. Van Aert raced the Tour of Norway at the end of last month and has been training at altitude with Vingegaard in recent weeks.
"I am really looking forward to the Tour de France," said Van Aert. "Obviously, this was not the plan at the beginning, but given my development in the last few weeks, I really wanted to do it, and the team agreed."
Van Aert had originally planned to race the Giro d'Italia this year. The Tour de France will allow the Belgian to prepare for the Olympic road race on Saturday 3 August.
