Tomorrowland prepares two backup plans following main stage fire

Tomorrowland organisers are currently working on two contingency plans for the upcoming weekend, following a fire that destroyed the festival’s iconic main stage in Boom. The plans were announced at a press conference on Thursday evening.

Under Plan A, the festival would go ahead as planned on Friday, albeit with an alternative, smaller-scale set-up in place of the main stage. In this scenario, the festival site would open later than planned, at 2 p.m. instead of midday. "There's still a lot of work to be done to make Plan A happen," said the organisers. Whether this is feasible depends on how quickly and safely the rebuild can proceed. More clarity is expected later this evening.

If the alternative main stage is not ready in time, Plan B would involve holding a separate party for Dreamville campsite residents on Friday. Other festivalgoers, including those with day or weekend tickets, would still have access to the rest of the festival grounds, as all the other stages at De Schorre would remain open. According to organisers, the event is expected to proceed "full monty" from Saturday onwards.

A fire broke out on the main stage on Wednesday while around 1,000 crew members were working on site. Thankfully, no one was injured and everyone was safely evacuated. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. According to eyewitnesses, fireworks were seen just before the blaze started, and unconfirmed reports suggest that it may have been caused by a malfunction during a test of fireworks cannons.
