Tim Wellens places first and Evenepoel second in Belgian Cycling Championship

Tim Wellens claimed his first Belgian road title on Sunday, powering to a solo victory after 230 kilometres in and around Binche.
The UAE Team Emirates–XRG rider went clear with 42 kilometres to go and held off a chasing duo to take the win. New national time trial champion Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) finished second, with Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin–Deceuninck) third. Arjen Livyns (Lotto) won the sprint for fourth ahead of Florian Vermeersch (UAE Team Emirates–XRG).
The race took off with 95 kilometres to go when a 16-man group, including all the top favourites, broke away. Mechanical issues and crashes gradually thinned the group. Wellens seized his chance on the third-to-last lap, opening a gap that grew to 41 seconds by the start of the final circuit. Despite efforts from Evenepoel and Philipsen, he was never caught.
For the 34-year-old Limburger, it's his 40th professional win and first of the season. He previously won the national time trial in Binche last year and now succeeds Arnaud De Lie, who won the road title in 2023.
