Wellens wins first Belgian Championship, Evenepoel takes second

Tim Wellens claimed his first Belgian road title on Sunday, powering to a solo victory after 230km in and around Binche. Compatriot Remco Evenepoel finished second.
The UAE Team Emirates–XRG rider went clear with 42km to go and held off a chasing duo to take the win. New national time trial champion Evenepoel finished second, with Jasper Philipsen third. Arjen Livyns won the sprint for fourth ahead of Florian Vermeersch.
The race took off with 95km to go when a 16-man group, including all the favourites, broke away. Mechanical issues and crashes gradually thinned the group. Wellens seized his chance on the third-to-last lap, opening a gap that grew to 41 seconds by the start of the final circuit. Despite efforts from Evenepoel and Philipsen, he was never caught.
This is the 34-year-old Limburger's 40th professional win and first of the season. He previously won the national time trial in Binche last year.
