Tim Merlier claims second stage victory in Tour de France

Belgium’s Tim Merlier has won Stage 9 of the Tour de France, a 174km race from Chinon to Chateauroux. Fellow Belgian Arnaud De Lie took third place.
Dutch rider Mathieu van der Poel led a breakaway for much of the race but was caught 800m from the finish. Merlier held on for the win in the final sprint, ahead of Jonathan Milan and De Lie. Another Belgian rider, Jordi Meeus, finished ninth.
The result doesn’t affect the top of the overall standings, with Slovenian Tadej Pogacar still 54 seconds ahead of Remco Evenepoel in the general classification.
Merlier, 32, the reigning European road race champion, claimed his second victory in this year’s Tour after winning the third stage in Dunkirk. He now has 62 career victories, including 12 this season.
