Harris aims to unify party and energise voters at Democratic convention
The Democratic National Convention (DNC) will take place from Monday to Thursday in Chicago. Following Joe Biden's exit from the race last month and his endorsement of vice-president Kamala Harris as the presidential nominee, the convention will mark a significant shift in the party's campaign strategy.
By naming Minnesota governor Tim Walz as her running mate, Harris hopes to unify the party and energise voters. The DNC will focus on the theme For the People, For Our Future, highlighting the Biden-Harris administration's achievements and contrasting them with the Republican candidates Donald Trump and his VP pick JD Vance. Key political figures, including former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, will speak alongside cultural influencers like Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
The convention is expected to draw around 50,000 visitors, including 4,000 delegates, and will feature both in-person and online programming. Harris, who has already been nominated through a virtual roll call, will formally accept the nomination during the event. The DNC will platform policy stances on issues such as price gouging and the child tax credit expansion, aiming to present the Harris-Walz ticket as the best choice for America's future.
The four-day event is designed to bolster support and lay out a clear vision for the party’s path forward. With the nomination process already complete, the convention will focus on messaging and mobilisation efforts ahead of the election.
