Term of NATO Secretary-General Stoltenberg extended for another year

NATO have agreed on Thursday to extend the term of Jens Stoltenberg as Secretary-General for one more year. The 30 member states voted unanimously in favour of the extension during the extraordinary NATO summit in Brussels.

Stoltenberg's mandate was supposed to end in September, after which he would become head of the Norwegian central bank. But the biggest European security crisis in decades has changed his plans. His term as Secretary-General will now end on the 30th of September, 2023.

The decision means that Sophie Wilmès (MR) will not become the first female head of NATO for now. The current Minister of Foreign Affairs and former Prime Minister of Belgium was rumoured to be one of the major candidates for the position.
