Technical problem temporarily disrupts Belgian airspace

No planes were able to take off or land at Belgium's main airports on Thursday afternoon. This was due to a technical problem that has since been resolved, air traffic controller skeyes told Belga.

Around 3pm, skyes noticed that the air traffic control system it uses to operate Belgian airspace was "not functioning as required", according to skeyes spokesman Kurt Verwilligen.

All aircraft flying in the airspace controlled by skeyes (up to about 7,500 metres) at that time were diverted to surrounding countries. Flights over Belgium above 7,500 metres were able to continue, as those are controlled by Eurocontrol.

The system became operational again around 4pm. "We are back in business," said Verwilligen. "The system is operational again and is stable. Air traffic can gradually restart."
