Dutch rider Demi Vollering (SD Worx) won the ninth edition of the Strade Bianche Donne in Siena, Italy, on Saturday. She narrowly beat her team-mate Lotte Kopecky, last year's winner, in a two-rider sprint.
The final 15 kilometres were nerve-wracking. As Vollering chased US leader Kristen Faulkner, a loose horse suddenly joined her. The Dutch rider was startled and braked briefly, losing a handful of seconds in the chase. When the horse went down in a bend, Vollering could continue.
Kopecky joined Vollering, and they overtook Faulkner as they entered Siena. The final sprint required a photo finish before the winner could be declared.
