Socialist union ACOD calls for national strike over public sector cuts on 20 May
The socialist trade union ACOD has called for a national strike in the public sector on Tuesday, 20 May. The action is aimed at protesting what the union describes as the "disastrous consequences of the Arizona policy for public services."
Criticism of public sector cuts
According to ACOD, the public sector has suffered from years of underinvestment, and recent decisions by the Arizona government have only worsened the situation. "Yet the Arizona government has decided to make additional cuts in both personnel and resources," the union said.
"The functioning of public services is being compromised. Citizens will receive less and less service and will lose a significant part of their purchasing power."
"Many will have to work longer for less pension"
The union is particularly critical of what it calls the “blind dismantling of pensions,” the weakening of social security and the erosion of civil service status. It claims that recent pension reforms are undermining long-standing rights. "The federal government is slashing at acquired rights with a blunt axe when it comes to pensions," the union stated. "As a result, many will have to work longer for less pension."
ACOD also objects to tighter rules on unemployment and long-term sick leave. It argues that the government is cutting back on social security support while failing to address revenue generation. "At the same time, not enough effort is being made to find additional income through fair taxation," said press officer Chris Reniers.
Wage concerns in Easter agreement
Finally, the union expressed disappointment with the recent Easter agreement, which stipulates that wages in the public sector will not be automatically increased if the pivot index is exceeded. According to ACOD, this decision will lead to public servants "losing a few hundred euros per year."
It remains unclear whether other trade unions will join the planned action.
