Russian DJ Nina Kraviz performs in Brussels tonight despite commotion

Unlike other festivals, the Brussels festival Core has decided to give Nina Kraviz a stage tonight. The Russian DJ has been criticized for not taking a stand on the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Russian DJ Nina Kraviz will perform in Brussels tonight during the first edition of Core, a brand new festival from Tomorrowland and Rock Werchter.

"We considered the pros and cons. The dilemma was presented to the old and new guard within the organisation. We came to the conclusion that Nina Kraviz in the first place is a great DJ and that was the deciding factor", the organisation announced.

Kraviz has been under fire, for allegedly being pro-Putin. For that reason, the Dutch distributor of Kraviz' label Trip Recordings ended the cooperation earlier this month. "In the past, including after the annexation of Crimea, Nina Kraviz has made several statements that could be construed as pro-Putin", it sounded.

Instagram

With 1.8 million followers on Instagram, many feel she should use her platform to take a stand, especially as one of Russia's most influential cultural exports. So far, she doesn't, 'because she does not understand politics and social processes'.

Although three festivals have already taken Kraviz off their bill, Core is standing its ground. Tonight, Kraviz will perform at the Ossegempark in Brussels.

"Tomorrowland is apolitical and will remain so," spokesperson Debby Wilmsen concludes.
