Rubio and Prévot hold talks on Venezuela and Gaza

US secretary of state Marco Rubio has met Belgium’s deputy prime minister and Foreign minister, Maxime Prévot, for talks on key global issues.
According to the US State Department, the meeting covered the situation in Venezuela, the importance of co-operation against drug trafficking, and the state of Gaza peace talks.
In a message on X, Prévot said the talks came at a “pivotal moment for the world” and allowed for an open and frank exchange between partners. He said they discussed a wide range of issues, including Greenland, Venezuela, Ukraine, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Middle East. While differences remain, Prévot stressed that Belgium and the US share strong common ground and responsibilities as allies.
The meeting follows comments by Prévot last week on Venezuela. After the US operation that led to the capture and removal of president Nicolas Maduro, Prévot said “Venezuelans deserve a democratic and legitimate regime”. He also warned that international law must be respected at all times and called for a “peaceful transition” that protects civilians.
