RSC Anderlecht chair offers resignation amid growing crisis

Wouter Vandenhaute, chair of football club RSC Anderlecht, has offered to step down. He informed the club’s board of directors in an email on Monday morning, according to several Belgian media reports. The board will meet on Friday to discuss his position.

The move comes after a difficult week for the Brussels club. Anderlecht were knocked out of European competition last Thursday, then lost the city derby 2-0 to Union Saint-Gilloise on Sunday. Fans displayed banners calling for Vandenhaute to leave, accusing the club’s leadership of poor management and bad decisions.

Club owner Marc Coucke is expected to give more clarity about his role at Anderlecht later today. As majority shareholder, he will have the final say on whether Vandenhaute’s resignation is accepted and on the direction the club will take next.

Anderlecht, once Belgium’s most successful football team, have been in near-constant transition since Coucke bought the club in 2018.
