Roos Vanotterdijk wins silver at European Aquatics Championships
Roos Vanotterdijk won silver at the European Aquatics Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, on Wednesday. She finished second in the 50m butterfly final in 26.08 seconds, winning Belgium's first European medal since 2018.
Sweden's Sara Junevik denied the 19-year-old Belgian the European title with a time of 25.68. Greece's Anna Ntountounaka took bronze in 26.18.
Kimberly Buys was the last Belgian to win a medal at a European swimming event, finishing third in the 50m backstroke in Glasgow in 2018. She also holds the Belgian record in the 50m butterfly at 25.70 seconds.
Vanotterdijk will also compete in the 100m butterfly and 100m backstroke this week. In the latter event she qualified for this summer's Olympic Games in Paris.
This is Vanotterdijk's third European Championships. Her previous best result was an eighth place finish in the 100m butterfly in 2022.
