Red Star Line Museum in Antwerp celebrates 10th anniversary
Thursday marked the 10th anniversary of Antwerp's Red Star Line Museum. This weekend, the museum was free for visitors to explore the shipping line's history, participate in workshops and tours and join in a Roaring 20s party.
More than 1 million people have visited the museum, housed in the departure halls of the Red Star Line shipping company on the Rijnkaai on Antwerp's Eilandje district. Between 1873 and 1934, almost 2 million people boarded a ship there on their way to a better life in America. The museum not only tells their history but also presents contemporary migration stories.
“The museum would like to use this anniversary to thank its donors, visitors and many partners," said city councillor responsible for Culture Nabilla Aid Daoud (N-VA). "Over the past 10 years, approximately 600 donors have entrusted migration stories and associated objects to the museum."
Last week, the free photo exhibition Donors opened in the museum, in which photographer Koen Broos photographed 10 donors of objects and stories. They symbolise the 10 years since the museum opened.
