Red Cross sells 11,500 emergency kits as Belgium urges preparedness

The Flemish Red Cross has sold 11,500 emergency kits since launching the product in late December, with a further 10,000 on the way, the organisation said on Tuesday.
The kits are designed to help people cope for the first 72 hours of a crisis, when emergency services may be under pressure. They include essentials such as a radio, first aid supplies and basic equipment to stay warm, dry and informed. Households are expected to add items like food, water and personal medication.
Spokesperson Vincent Verbeecke said recent events, including power outages, floods, heatwaves and the war in Ukraine, show the importance of being prepared. He added that the organisation launched its own kit to offer a reliable, ready-made option amid a growing number of alternatives on the market.
The previous waiting list has now largely been cleared, and new orders are open. The kits cost 154.95 euros, with proceeds supporting the organisation’s work.
The announcement comes as Belgium steps up efforts to improve public resilience. The National Crisis Centre has launched a nationwide campaign urging households to be ready to manage on their own for at least 72 hours in an emergency.
Officials say the initiative aims to raise awareness and encourage practical steps such as keeping supplies at home and knowing where to find reliable information during a crisis.
