Red Cross Flanders launches emergency kits

Around 70 per cent of people in Flanders would like to keep an emergency kit at home, yet more than half say they struggle to assemble one. In response, Red Cross Flanders is launching a ready-made emergency kit and offering guidance on which essential items it should contain.
Emergency kits can prove vital in a wide range of crisis scenarios. However, when disaster strikes, many households find themselves unprepared because they do not know where to start.
“Past events, such as the massive power outage in Spain, the floods in Wallonia and Germany, the heat waves in Southern Europe, the conflict in Ukraine and the coronavirus pandemic, teach us how important it is for everyone to be aware that an emergency situation can occur,” says Vincent Verbeecke, spokesperson for Red Cross Flanders.
When emergencies escalate, first responders may be overwhelmed and communication channels disrupted. “In acute emergencies, you may be left to fend for yourself. That’s why we emphasise life-saving first aid knowledge and the importance of an emergency plan and emergency kit,” Verbeecke says.
Essential checklist
To help people prepare, Red Cross Flanders has compiled a checklist of the most important items needed to get through the first 72 hours of a crisis independently. These include non-perishable water and food, a rechargeable radio, a first aid kit and supplies to stay warm and dry.
The organisation is also introducing its own ready-made emergency kits in a water-resistant backpack. It includes an emergency radio that also serves as a power bank and torch, first aid kit, disinfectant wipes, multifunctional pocket knife, thermal blanket, reflective vest, waterproof matches, drip-proof candle, waterproof and fireproof document holder, insulating and heat-resistant emergency poncho, waterproof tape, a 5m safety rope and an emergency whistle.
Red Cross Flanders says users should still add bulk essentials such as non-perishable food and water, as well as personal items like warm clothing or necessary medication.
The kits cost 154.95 euros, with proceeds supporting the work of Red Cross Flanders. Further information, along with the full checklist for those assembling their own kit, is available from the organisation's website.
