Rallies held in Brussels and across France in support of Gisèle Pelicot
Several hundred people gathered in Brussels on Saturday in support of Gisèle Pelicot, the French woman whose husband is on trial charged with repeatedly drugging her and inviting dozens of men to rape her in her own home. Similar rallies were held across France, showing support for victims of rape and calling for “shame to change sides”.
The Brussels rally took place at Place Poelaert at around noon, organised by several women’s rights organisations including Balance ton bar.
“We are all here for Gisèle,” said initiator Maïté Meeûs. “This trial is a powerful symbol of sexual violence against women and children.” Demonstrations are also taking place in Liège.
By waiving her right to anonymity and agreeing for the trial of her husband and 50 men he is accused of recruiting online to rape her while she was unconscious to be made public, the 71-year-old has sparked a wave of support for victims of rape and sexual assault.
The trial of Dominique Pelicot and the 50 other men is taking place in Avignon. Dominique Pelicot is expected to testify on Monday.
The Pelicots’ daughter, Caroline, who believes her father abused her when she was unconscious, has also taken the stand. Her father has admitted the charges against him in relation to his wife but denies abusing his daughter.
A 2020 report by Amnesty International Belgium and SOS Viol found that 47 per cent of Belgians have experienced sexual violence. In the vast majority of cases, the offences were committed by family or friends.
