Puratos to buy US bakery group Dawn Foods

Belgian food company Puratos has agreed to buy American bakery supplier Dawn Foods in a major international deal. The price has not been disclosed, and the takeover is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
Both companies said the move brings together “complementary strengths”. Dawn Foods is known for its expertise in American sweet bakery products such as donuts, muffins, cookies and brownies. Puratos specialises in ingredients and technology for bakery, patisserie and chocolate products.
Dawn Foods, founded in 1920 and based in Michigan, supplies more than 50,000 customers in over 100 countries. It employs nearly 4,000 people. After the takeover, the total workforce of Puratos will grow to around 15,000 employees worldwide.
Puratos, founded in Belgium in 1919, had about 11,000 staff and a turnover of €3.4 billion in 2024. The company aims to increase its annual revenue to €5 billion by 2030. The acquisition of Dawn Foods is seen as a major step towards that goal.
The companies say combining Dawn’s product creativity with Puratos’ research-driven ingredient technology will help them serve a wider range of bakery customers.
Dawn Foods has one site in Belgium, in Manage. However, the factory is due to close later this year, leading to about 80 job losses.
