Foreign minister Prévot says only EU action can influence Israel

Following Sunday’s large-scale protest in Brussels against Israeli violence in Gaza, Belgian Foreign minister Maxime Prévot acknowledged demonstrators’ calls for stronger political action but emphasised Belgium’s limited influence.
“Yes, of course I’ve heard the message,” he said on De Ochtend on Radio 1. “But let’s be honest: little Belgium alone won’t make Israel change course. That must happen at the European level.”
Prévot noted that the federal government agrees on targeted sanctions against violent settlers, Hamas leaders and two far-right Israeli ministers. “Few foreign ministers have used such strong language about genocide. We’ve sent clear signals, but I understand the frustration.”
He admitted difficulties remain over broader trade and political ties with Israel. Belgium’s continued dealings with Israeli defence firms and the EU’s Association Agreement with Israel remain contentious issues, with parties like MR and N-VA opposing further action.
“From a human point of view, it’s hard,” Prévot added. “Personally, I feel strongly about Gaza. But within the government, we must keep pushing to remain among the countries demanding sanctions.”
