Peruvian car glass manufacturer AGP invests 80 million euro in Port of Ghent
Peruvian car glass manufacturer AGP will build a new factory in the port of Ghent, reports De Tijd. The 80 million euro investment will create at least 500 jobs.
AGP develops and produces glass for the automotive, military and security sectors. Among other things, it supplies the windscreens for Tesla's Model X. Besides glass for passenger cars, it also produces bulletproof glass for military vehicles, police cars and naval vessels. It also describes itself as a world authority in the development of panoramic roofs, a high-tech, difficult market. It employs 3,400 people and has six production sites and four innovation centres in Europe, North and South America.
AGP already has two plants in Belgium, one in Zwijnaarde and one in Roeselare. Earlier this year, AGP moved its headquarters from Lima to Belgium, making it the base of choice for the European market.
The new site will focus mainly on the electric car market and, according to people at the company, serves to accommodate the expected growth in the rapidly rising segment of 'smart' glass applications. Examples include interchangeable glazing and photovoltaic gadgets. At Ghent, AGP will install production lines that carry out value-added assembly and glass assembly activities in addition to activities for the storage and distribution of its auto glass.
