Almost half of people in Flanders wary of serving tap water to guests

More than eight out of ten people in Flanders drink tap water at home. Yet almost half of them are afraid to serve it to guests, according to a recent survey by AquaFlanders, the federation of Flemish water and wastewater companies.
The AquaFlanders survey shows that while 82 per cent of people in Flanders drink tap water, 46 per cent are afraid to serve it to their guests. The province of Limburg tops the list with 89 percent of people drinking tap water at home. In West Flanders, only 75 percent of people do so.
There is no reason to avoid tap water in Flanders, says the federation. Tap water is one of the best-controlled foodstuffs in the country, constantly monitored by independent laboratories and complying with European and Flemish standards. It is also environmentally friendly and comes from local sources.
"Tap water is local, sustainable, cheap and of the highest quality"
Not only that, but tap water is also "a financial no-brainer", according to AquaFlanders. On average, tap water costs 0.7 eurocents per litre - that's 300 times less than bottled water. Those who make the switch easily save hundreds of euros a year, the federation says.
"Tap water is local, sustainable, cheap and of the highest quality," says Carl Heyrman, director general of AquaFlanders. "The fact that almost half do not dare to serve it to their guests shows that perception is sometimes stronger than fact". AquaFlanders is therefore calling on the Flemish to consciously serve tap water, including in the catering industry.
