Peace Run in Ghent to raise funds for Doctors Without Borders’ Gaza aid project

The Peace Run for Gaza will be held at Ghent’s Wouter Weylandt Stadium on Sunday, 5 October, raising money for Doctors Without Borders’ (MSF) emergency aid project for children in the Gaza Strip.
“The goal is to bridge the symbolic distance of 4,200 kilometres from Ghent to Gaza, together with as many Ghent residents as possible,” say the organisers, Sportaround vzw, Sport Eldorado and Teachers Without Borders from Artevelde University College.
“We are consciously drawing a red line against polarisation, intolerance and the injustice affecting Gaza. With the Peace Run, we want to send a powerful message: we choose peace, hope and solidarity,” says Lieve Stevens on behalf of Teachers Without Borders.
Ghent Olympic marathon runner Bashir Abdi will open the event at 13:00 with a twelve-kilometre run. Other participants include former Belgian Cat Jana Raman, Olympic rower Tim Brys and heptathlete Jente Hauttekeete.

The organisers are also encouraging companies and organisations to take part. “The Peace Run is open to sponsorship. Every euro contributed by partners and sponsors, just like the participants’ fees, goes entirely to Doctors Without Borders. Our ambition is to raise a historically large amount together and thus send a powerful message of solidarity. Companies that commit not only demonstrate social leadership but also make a tangible contribution to vital aid for children in Gaza,” the organisation states.
