Parents and child killed after car hit by drunk driver
A couple and their eight-year-old daughter were killed in West Flanders on Sunday morning when their car was hit at speed by a drunk driver.
The man sustained minor injuries and has been arrested, the West Flanders public prosecutor’s office reports.
The incident happened at around 1.00 on Sunday. The emergency services received a report of an overturned car on the E403 at Ruddervoorde, with a man trapped inside. A short distance away, they found a second car on the verge. In it were a woman, aged 30, a man, 29, and an eight-year-old girl, who were pronounced dead at the scene.
According to initial findings, the 50-year-old driver hit the family’s car at high speed. A spokesperson for the public prosecutor told VRT the man was heavily under the influence of alcohol and had already been convicted more than 10 times, including several times for drink-driving.
His driving licence has been taken away several times, but he has never been jailed.
