Open Churches Day: Nearly 500 churches welcome visitors

This Saturday and Sunday, nearly 500 churches across Belgium will open their doors to visitors for the 18th edition of Open Churches Day. A variety of activities will highlight the country’s remarkable religious heritage over the weekend, including dance performances, exhibitions and guided tours.

The initiative seeks to engage people from all walks of life and encourage them to rediscover the cultural and historical significance of churches. Organised by the non-profit association Open Churches, the event aims to make ecclesiastical heritage accessible to all, while also breathing new life into these buildings as part of community life. The organisation also supports efforts to redefine the role of places of worship in modern society.

Landmarks

Churches are significant not only to believers, but also to local residents who feel a connection to these landmarks in their neighbourhoods regardless of faith, to tourists in search of unique stories and to many visitors with a passion for history and heritage.

The first Open Churches Day took place in 2008. Since then, it has become a flagship event that officially marks the start of the tourist season in Belgium and Luxembourg.

Open Churches Days are held each year on the first weekend in June. Information on participating churches and the full programme of activities can be found at openchurches.eu.
